Dendrobium moniliforme is indigenous to Japan. As anepiphytic orchid, it blooms in early summer and its flower is white
or slightly pink and it smells sweet. The Japanese usually call thiss pecies SEKKOKU, with this name being brought from China with
the usage of this plant as a Chinese medicine. Enthusiasts call itscultivars groups CHOOSEIRAN (= long life orchid) as Japanese
traditional pot plants. In old times, this species was known just asa medicinal herb. In the Edo period (1603-1867), enthusiasts got
to collect wild species with interesting leaf forms and variegationfrom the habitat and grew them as foliage plants. At the end of
the Edo period, there was a boom in this plant. In the botanicalbook "CHOOSEISO"(= "Long-life Plants", published in 1835), the
author Mr. AKIOTEI SHUJIN introduced five cultivars withinteresting flowers and 50 cultivars with interesting leaf forms
and variegation. There were 135 cultivars depicted in the book"CHOOSEISO MITATE KAGAMI" (= "Encyclopedia of Dendrobium
moniliforme") published by AICHI SHACHU in 1886. Enthusiasts have preserved these cultivars until now. There are enthusiast's
groups of this species and they register new cultivars every year. Dendrobium moniliforme is quite easy to grow, so it has become
familiar to general enthusiasts, which contrasts with the case ofNeofinetia falcata (FURAN, wind orchid).
