Orchid Plants - Five of My Favorite Fragrant Orchid Plants

What is your favorite fragrant orchid?

Everyone that loves blooming plants (plants that produce flowers) has a favorite fragrant flower. Some love roses because they smell so beautiful.. still others love Lilac because the scent is so delicious and the flower is beautiful too! But not even the scent of roses or lilac compares to the scent of orchid flowers. I am sorry Lilac lovers but... Some orchid scents are so unique they are hard to describe. Trying to say.. "it smells like.." is nearly impossible as you can't find the words to describe how an orchid flower smells. The scents can be so complex, it boggles the mind. All you can do is say "Ahh" after taking a whif of an orchid flower. I'm going to try to describe the scents of five of my favorite fragrant orchids. Drum roll please...

Fragrant Orchid Plant Number 1: Dendrobium (Speciosum - Kingianum) - If you are an orchid grower, you know the scent of only a few of these orchids in the greenhouse is enough to fill the entire greenhouse with the crisp scent of orchids. What does this orchid smell like? It smells like hyacinth. The scent is very crisp but not sweet. The flower smells like a mixture of chemicals that is hard to define. I can't remember where I smelled something like this...

Fragrant Orchid Plant Number 2: Large flowering Cattleya orchid - If you have been around orchids you know that large flowering Cattleyas orchid plants produce a scent that smells like bubble gum. That's right, the flower smells like bubble gum. Growing up we chewed a bumble gum that's called Bubble Yum bubble gum and this flower smells like that. It's an edible scent that smells like your favorite bubble gum.

Fragrant Orchid Plant Number 3: Oncidium Sharry Baby "Sweet Fragrance" AM/AOS - A list of my favorite blooming orchid plants is not complete without Oncidium Sharry Baby "Sweet Fragrance" AM/AOS - the orchid plant that smells like chocolate. Oncidium Sharry Baby "Sweet Fragrance" has to be the most popular fragrant orchids of all time.

Fragrant Orchid Plant Number 4: Maxillaria tenuifolia (O) - Here's a fragrant orchid plant that is not too hard to describe. Maxillaria tenuifolia (O) smells like coconut and that's why it's known as the coconut orchid.

Fragrant Orchid Plant Number 5: The flowers of Cymbidium Golden Elf "Sundust" smell like lime. The scent is tart and crisp and smells like lime. Yum!! I can go on and on with this list of fragrant orchid plants but I have shared only five of my favorite. Enjoy!
