More Information About Butterfly Orchids
The words butterfly orchid is misleading because it is not common to refer to a butterfly orchid in the genera phalaenopsis. Butterfly orchids are found in the genera oncidium, epidendrium, habenera, psychopsis just to name a few. So why do we call our phalaenopsis orchid butterfly orchids? Because phalaenopsis are more commonly known as moth orchids and the word "moth" denotes a flying insect that appears in your cupboards if you leave a box of cereal open for too long. So we refer to our phalaenopsis as butterfly orchids because it sounds better and it's a much prettier name. Wikipedia doesn't even include phalaenopsis in there list of orchid genera known also as butterfly orchids so maybe if we continue to call phalaenopsis butterfly orchids, the name will catch on and replace moth orchid to describe phalaenopsis.
