    Lady slipper orchid is a term used to describe the orchids in the subfamily Cypripedioidea, which includes the genera Cypripedium, Mexipedium, Paphiopedilum, Phragmipedium and Selenipedium, distinguished by their slipper-shaped pouches (modified labellums), which function by trapping insects so that they are forced to climb up past the staminode, behind which they collect or deposit pollinia.  This slipper orchid is a paphiopedilum orchid nestled in our red ceramic planter.  Lady slipper orchid is sent in bloom ready to be enjoyed.  Orchid in planter measures 14 inches tall.

    If orchids have a mystique that sets them above other plants, then slipper orchids must represent the best of the best or the royalty of the orchid world.  Slipper orchids have mesmerized orchid lovers for centuries.  Many have described the slipper orchids pouch with funny names and natures design of the flower has made this orchid a very popular gift orchid indeed.  The range of the slipper orchid or Paphiopedilum genus extends from India, eastwards across southern China to the Philippines, throughout Southeast Asian and Malaysia, to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.  New slipper orchid species continue to be discovered, particularly in remote rain forest areas of Kalimantan, Indonesia and China.
