Beautifully textured flowers are hard to the touch. The flower shape resembles the popular Ghost Orchid of Florida. Angcm. eburneum x Angcm. sesquipedale (1899) was registered by Veitch and has become a much sought after orchid. The flower produces a long claw that grows from behind the flower which makes this a very interesting orchid plant indeed. Easy to grow. Cross: Species, Bloom Season: Spring, Pot Size: Four Inch, Mature Plant
Angcm. Veitchii (Angcm. is short for
Angraecum, the common name is
Angrek or
Comet Orchid probably because the flower resembles a comet. Actually the flower looks more like a star. The flowers are very alluring and are generally not held by a flower plant stake as most of our orchids are. We allow the flower spike on Angcm. Veitchii to just hang, with no supporting flower plant stake to hold up the stem. The photo below shows the affect this creates and gives a birds eye view of the orchids' spur which can extend up to 30cm. The flower spur on Angcm. veitchii is what caused Charles Darwin to theorize that there must be a moth with a proboscis (tongue) long enough to be able to remove the nectar which settled at the bottom of the spur. It was later discovered that indeed a moth did exist that had this long proboscis.
The foliage of Angcm. veitchii is very robust and hard to the touch. Mature plants easily produce multiple flower stems. The blooming orchid can be placed on a pedestal to be able to view the beautiful green flowers easier. Angcm. veitchii is suprisingly easy to grow and should be part of any orchid collection.
We suggest Angcm. veitchii be re-potted quickly into a large orchid container like the one shown in the photo. In these photos, Angcm. veitchii orchids are shown in our new three gallon containers. These large orchid pots are thick and sturdy, just right to support the invasive root system of Angcm. veitchii. In these orchid pots, Angcm. veitchii can be allowed to grow to specimen size.
Whether you are a novice orchid grower or a seasoned orchid grower, your orchid collection should not be without this very special and easy to grow orchid. They require very little maintenance and most always reward you every year with very alluring orchid flowers. One thing we have discovered about Angcm. veitchii is that they are susceptible to scale. The orchid plant should be inspected from time to time for this pest. Of course, our temperature controlled greenhouses and pest free maintenance makes sure you get healthy, beautiful orchid plants every time.
In a large pot, Angcm. veitchii will grow pups that can be divided from the orchid plant but we suggest leaving the pups on the orchid and recommend transplanting the orchid into a large pot instead of removing the pups to create new plants. Eventually the orchid will grow specimen size making it that much more alluring.
