About our Chocolate Scented Orchid
Oncidium Sharry Baby "Sweet Fragrance" AM/AOS Combines the smell of chocolate with the scent of vanilla producing a fragrance that smells edible making this the most popular chocolate smelling orchid. Not only will you want to admire the beautiful flowers but you may be tempted to take a bite. But don't eat it, this orchid is not edible even though it smells edible. Oncidium Sharry Baby "Sweet Fragrance" may be the only orchid we know that produces this edible scent.
Oncidium Sharry Baby "Sweet Fragrance" AM/AOS - Our chocolate smelling orchid is an epiphytic orchid of hybrid origins (O. Jamie Sutton X O. Honolulu). The chocolate scented orchid's pseudobulbs are egg-shaped to 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) across by approximately 3.5 inches (9 cm) long with 2 leathery leaves up to 18 inches (45 cm) long by 2 inches (5 cm) wide. I received this orchid as a gift and was really impressed with the flower size and fragrance. The chocolate scented orchid is an easy orchid to grow and I highly recommend it for all orchid enthusiasts and for beginners.
Blooming: In the greenhouse, the chocolate scented orchid blooms in late summer to early fall. The rich mahogany and cream colored flowers are very showy and have the fragrance of vanilla chocolate as we mentioned above. The flowers are long lasting. Bloom stalks can reach up to 3 feet (1 m) in height and may need to be staked for support. Individual flowers are up to 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) long by 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide.
Culture: Oncidium Sharry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance' - the chocolate scented orchid needs a well drained compost and full to partial sun. In the greenhouse, we use compost consisting of Osmunda or tree fern fiber, with sphagnum moss and small bark chips added to ensure good drainage. The chocolate scented orchids are watered and allowed to dry before adding water again. We fertilize the plants weekly with an orchid special fertilizer during the growing season. Plants do best with morning sun and afternoon shade. In the greenhouse, we started growing them in full sun and the leaves tended to produce brownish spots. After moving the plants to a new shaded location this stopped. The chocolate scented orchid should never be subjected to temperatures lower than 60°F (15°C) at night. During the winter months, water is restricted to watering plants only enough to keep the pseudobulbs from shriveling.
Anyone will be delighted with our chocolate smelling orchid so buy one today.
Propagation: Oncidium Sharry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance' is propagated by the division of the pseudobulbs in spring.
