Valentine's Day Orchids
Valentine's Day is right around the corner and you want to surprise your sweetie with something unique - Send Valentine's Day orchids
Valentine's Day orchids and flowers make great gifts for Valentine's Day for many reasons. Orchid plants are long lasting and beautiful to behold. Orchid flowers are equally long lasting and they are so beautiful to admire. Valentine's Day orchids are great gifts because they can be combined to create a gift fit for a queen. That means you can combine orchid plants in a basket. You can combine one, two or three orchid plants in a basket. You can combine colors like pink, red and purple. To make a real impact, you can also use all the same colors like red - the color of love. Imagine the look on her face when she sees an Orchid Gift Basket with your favorite red orchid plants. It will take her breath away! Valentine's Day orchid flowers are also the perfect gift. Orchid flower stems can be combined to create a floral bouquet of ten, twenty even thirty orchid flower stems. Orchid flower stems can be combined to create a bouquet of color that will make even the hardest to please smile. Imagine the look on their face this Valentine's Day when they see an elegant glass vase filled with orchid flower stems that are so beautiful it takes her breath away. Red roses and carnations are the traditional floral gift for Valentine's Day but don't forget orchid plants and flowers because they make great gifts too. Happy Valentine's Day!

The variety of orchid plants is endless so you can imagine how many different shapes and sizes orchid flowers appear. Orchid plants produce some of the smallest flowers in any of the flowering plants found on earth. On December 3, 2009--The world's smallest known orchid j ust over 2 millimeters (0.08 inch) across and nearly see-through—was discovered nestled in the roots of another flower in Ecuador. Winter Orchids

Winter Orchids
It's cold outside but it's warm in the orchid greenhouse which means blooming orchid plants galore!
One
of the best things about orchids is that you can find blooming orchids
year round. At this time of the year, the most popular orchid
houseplant, Phalaenopsis, is blooming. These plants have long graceful
inflorescences (stems) holding large flowers. They will last up to four
months under good household conditions and are a real bargain when
compared to other blooming plants or cut flowers. The flowers come in a
variety of colors from white, pink, purple, red, orange, and yellow.
Another
winter favorite is the Cymbidium orchid. These cheerful plants will
flower for around two months in a variety of colors and sizes. They come
in a variety of colors from white with colored lips, through the
oranges and reds, and lavenders. They have been bred for years and it is
possible to find almost any color or color combination that you wish.
The standard size will produce inflorescences of approximately 3 feet
or, or 90 centimeters; the compact and miniature plants are somewhat
smaller and the inflorescences only one or two 2 feet or 30-60
centimeters. They are very popular on the west coast in the United
States and are often used in outdoor plantings in the northern part of
the state where there are cool but not freezing temperatures. My
favorite variety to brighten up a dull January is the lemon yellow
varieties with up to 15 flowers on an inflorescence.
Many
Oncidium Alliance plants are now blooming with a profusion of small
flowers that will move in a breeze. Their fanciful name, Dancing Ladies,
describes exactly how the flowers look as they move. They come in an
amazing variety of sizes and colors for all decorating needs and will
last for about a month. One of the most interesting of these is the
Psychopsis orchid which looks like a big butterfly at the end of its
stalk. They are bright yellow with orange striping. Another interesting
member of the Oncidium family, Tolumnia is a tiny plant which will fit
into any space. They need a fair amount of sun to bloom, but are long
lasting and very showy.
Another
winter flowering orchid is the Paphiopedilum or Lady Slipper. You would
never guess that they are in the orchid family when you first see them.
They have a large dorsal (top) petal, two side sepals and a slipper
shaped lip after which they are named. They come in colors ranging from
green through the darkest purple. Some have but one flower on an
inflorescence, while others are multi-floral or have more than one
flower on an inflorescence. The flowers are very long lasting and the
plants will grow in low light situations making them very popular for
windowsill growers.
So, brighten up your January and February with one of these blooming orchids and chase away the winter blues!

Christmas in July Orchid Plant Maxillaria tenouifolia

Christmas in July Orchid PlantIs there such a thing as a Christmas in July orchid plant?
We use acronyms to describe just about everything these days but that's ok, if it makes life easier to live, then I'm all for it. You know, reduce the size of the letters in a word to make it faster to pronounce. Which leads me into the reason for my post. If we can have accronyms for just about every word (mostly ailments) then we can have a Christmas in July orchid plant. Thus, I proclaim that the Maxillaria tenoufolia be the official Christmas in July orchid plant. What do you think?
Maxillaria tenoufolia has all the makings of a Christmas in July orchid plant. First of all, the orchid plant is very easy to grow and will thrive in a bright location inside your bathroom or by the window in the kitchen where you can keep an eye on this orchid jewel. With proper care, the orchid plant will continue to grow. We suggest that you transplant the orchid plant into a bigger pot when ready. Many of us are tempted to take cuttings from a mature plant, but we suggest that you continue to transplant this special orchid plant into a bigger and bigger pot until you have a specimen. When the plant is about six to seven years old, you will start to be rewarded with multiple blooms on a single plant.
Second, the orchid plant is very fragrant and smells like coconut. Take a whiff of this beatiful fragrance, close your eyes and imagine yourself on a tropical island celebrating Christmas. Where do you want to be on Christmas? Take another whiff of this beautiful orchid fragrance and close your eyes again and imagine being there. Smile. Now open your eyes. It's July, Christmas is five months away, there is still time to plan the best Christmas of your life!
Lastly, you can replace your existing house plant with a genuine orchid plant. Imagine the look on there face when you tell them that beautiful orchid plant on your kitchen window is a genuine orchid plant - that raises your "I am sophisticated quotient" ten points right there! And Maxillaria tenoufolia doesn't even look like an orchid, more like grass. Also, orchid lovers know that orchid plants are the plants of choice for royalty.

Christmas Orchids

Christmas Orchids are a Great Flower to Use for Decorating and Giving this Christmas
By Phillip Estenson, November 18, 2008
Christmas Orchids Come in Many Colors Like Red, White and GreenSpread the holiday cheer with beautiful blooming Christmas orchids
For many like me there is no more magical time than Christmas and orchid
plants and flowers take that magic to another dimension. The worlds
most popular flower plant, the poinsettia can be combined with the
second most popular flowering plant to create a holiday like no other.
You can also combine Christmas orchids with other popular holiday plants
like Holly, Miniature Christmas Trees and Amaryllis.
Various
colors of Christmas orchids can be used when decorating. You can use
traditional white using white phalaenopsis orchids. You can use large
or small flowering types to create contrast. Trust me, placing just a
few of these Christmas orchids in your decor will help your decor shout:
elegance!
You
can use red using Arachnis orchids like Aranda and Mokara orchids.
These are very popular cut orchid flowers but mokaras are especially
popular for Christmas. You don't need a lot of stems to create a
beautiful effect. Between five and ten red Mokara orchid stems nestled
in a clear vase should do the trick. Mokara orchid stems generally have
between ten to 12 blooms. They come in essentially two shades. A
shade that is blood red. The other shade is darker because a closer
look at the flower reveals spots that make the flower look darker red.
Either one should add another dimension to your Christmas decorating.
Cut
Christmas orchids also give you more bang for your buck. They are long
lasting and really add a real dimension of elegance against other
Christmas flowers like red roses, red carnations and white
chrysanthemums. I love red carnations and their beautiful scent but
what most orchids lack in scent (most orchids don't have a fragrance we
as humans can smell, but bees can!) is beauty and elegance. With cut
orchid flowers you only need to use a few flowers to create holiday
magic.
With
the advent of the Internet - you don't have to dry to an orchid show
(although I highly recommend everyone visit an orchid show) or your
local florist (don't tell them I said that) you can either go directly
to the farm or shop many of the fine Internet orchid sites.
Orchidmall.com is a great place to start. On these sites you can find
orchids currently in bloom for the months of November and December. For
example, in California, the Cymbidium orchid season (another popular
Christmas orchid) starts in November. Many growers and retailers only
charge a little extra to get an orchid with blooms. This is a special
treat in Christmas because orchids truly are an excellent Christmas gift
not to mention they make your decor look something out of the space
age! meaning its decor ahead of its time.
Finally,
Christmas orchids can add a twist to your holiday decor. Yes Christmas
looks beautiful in all red but change it up a little, have fun! Two
pink phalaenopsis orchids should do it. Orchid growers and breeders are
now creating spectacular orchids originating from the United States,
Taiwan, Holland, and Singapore. A desire to create more spectacular
orchid plants will require florists and interior decorators to be more
creative in both selling and designing with differently colored orchids
like pinks, yellows and harlequin orchid types.

Miniature Moth Orchid Plants

Miniature Moth Orchid Plants All The Rage
Many of these orchid plants are just as beautiful as there large flowering counterparts
Big things do come in small packages like diamonds and pearls.. which have high unit value (high unit value is the value of something relative to size.. if something is small and very valuable, it has a high unit value). Woohoo! So I propose we include small flowering moth orchid plants in this group. Miniature moth orchids are the jewels of the orchid kingdom not only to have in an orchid collection but to give as gifts and enjoy in the home.
I am very lucky to be around orchids all the time. Not a day goes by where I don't see an orchid plant of some type. Lately these plants have been getting smaller. It started late 2010 when I saw my first miniature moth orchids at an orchid show. I asked the orchid grower what was up with these miniature orchids. He said miniature moth orchids have been grown in Japan for many years and it is just catching on here in the United States. The timing of the arrival of these miniature beauties could not be better. The economy is down and we want more value. Miniature moth orchids provide that value and much more.
It is amazing to comprehend all the beauty that surrounds us. Miniature moth orchids have made our world even prettier. Just imagine on orchid plant in a small orchid planter or decorative wicker basket. Or imagine combining these little beauties to create a basket of orchids with two, three or six orchid plants in one basket. The reaction will definitely be wow!
These miniature moth orchid plants have become a part of our orchid offering and we had to come up with a way to offer these orchid plants to our online customers. Selling these in the greenhouse is easy.. just display them and they sell. Online we came up with a way to order these beauties as a single plant or you can combine them to create a basket of orchids fit for any budget. Catch the wave of miniature moth orchids. The trend may be here to stay.
Here are three of my favorite miniature moth orchids.

Orchid Growing in Your Home
Orchid growing is easy if you follow the time tested techniques of experienced orchid growers
I hear this alot, "I love orchids but I always kill mine.." or "How do you keep your orchids alive, I always kill mine?" Growing orchids in your home is easy if you follow the time tested techniques of experienced orchid growers. First of all, I will assume that you received an orchid plant with flowers as a gift. The first thing you want to do is find a place to put your new orchid plant. I have been very successful growing my orchids in the bathroom. I have collected so many plants, that I use my bathroom as a mini greenhouse since it is both humid and bright in that location.
Look at the orchid plant and see if it has a lot of flower buds. The more flower buds the orchid plant has, the brighter the location you want to put the orchid. Now, you will need to monitor the orchid plant periodically to make sure orchid flowers are not falling off prematurely. If the flowers fall off quickly, it means you have placed the orchid in a non opimal location and it will need to be moved to another location. Try placing the orchid in a bright location where it is humid like the bathroom or next to the kitchen sink. Orchid flowers are very long lasting so you shouldn't see flowers dropping right away. Falling orchid flowers means the orchid is not in a good location or the orchid plant has bloomed out..
After the orchid flowers have fallen off the orchid plant, I suggest that you leave the orchid flower stem and don't cut it. Some orchids are ever-blooming like phalaenopsis and the flower spike may produce another set of flower buds at the tip of the stem. You will want to cut the flower stem if you notice the stem is dead and won't produce any more buds. If the whole stem is dead, you can cut it off about 1/2 inch from the base of the foliage, otherwise if only a portion of the stem is dead, cut that portion off as you may get another shoot coming from the original stem. If you were successful in getting the orchid plant to produce another flower spike, then the orchid is doing great and you found a location in your home where you can bring other orchids to enjoy. As your collection grows, you may need to invest in a hobby greenhouse where you can place your orchids after they have finished blooming. I like to bring in those orchids from the greenhouse into the home that have produced a flower spike so I can enjoy the flowers in the home.
Finally, do the following to keep your orchids healthy and flourishing wherever you have decided to place the orchid plants. One, wash the dust off the foliage periodically. Don't let dust accumulate on the foliage as this inhibits photosynthesis not to mention the orchids look prettier when they are clean. Two, don't over water. Orchids die because too much water. Make sure the orchid is not sitting in water or smells of stagnant water. Stagnant water means the orchid will die soon. Finally, buy a good book on orchid growing to learn more of the basics of orchid care.
With these helpful techniques, you are on your way to growing beautiful orchids like the experienced orchid growers. Happy orchid growing!

Orchid Plants
Orchid plants come in many colors but none more exquisite than white
Here is an interesting idea.. if orchid plants have always existed (i make that statement after reading an article that orchid pollen was found on a bee fossilized in amber) then it is only natural that they be so ubiquitous. I mean, orchid plants are everywhere these days or is that my reticulated thinking where all I see is orchids. So here is my theory.. if orchids have existed on earth for millions of years (orchid fossils have been found in the mesozoic era) then the fact they are now everywhere is a natural evolution of this very special plant.
The poinsettia plant is still the most popular flowering plant in the world. Statistics prove year after year the poinsettia plant still outsells orchid plants. This is amazing since poinsettia plants are only sold in those few weeks leading into Christmas day, December 25. I love Christmas so seeing a fully blooming poinsettia plant in just the right setting - there is no prettier site. Poinsettia plants are so popular because they have become synonymous with Christmas.. as traditional as the Christmas tree, Christmas lights or religious statues.
Which leads me into the reason for my post.

Orchid plants come in many colors, none more exquisite than blue orchids
As long as I can remember, blue has been my favorite color. I remember saying, my favorite color is the color of blue eyes - that light blue color that makes you melt at the sight of someone with blue eyes. Yep, blue was and still is my favorite color. That's why it is a no brainer if you ask me what is my favorite orchid color. Of course, I will say blue! Blue orchids are special flowers because they are rarely seen and the color is exquisite.
There is two types of blue orchids. The popular dyed blue orchids and the real blue orchids. Real blue orchids can be found in the Cattleya and Dendrobium orchid family. It is interesting that true blue orchids exist in actual air plants. Both Cattleyas and Dendrobium orchids are epiphytic - meaning they are true air plants, relying on the air you and I breathe to live. Blue orchids are also found in the Phalaenopsis and other species but more so in the Cattleya and Dendrobium orchid family.
The color blue produced by these orchids plants is exquisite. In a greenhouse, where other orchid plants are in blue, the color blue from a blue orchid stands out like the sun.

Orchid Plants - Five of My Favorite Fragrant Orchid Plants
What is your favorite fragrant orchid?
Everyone that loves blooming plants (plants that produce flowers) has a favorite fragrant flower. Some love roses because they smell so beautiful.. still others love Lilac because the scent is so delicious and the flower is beautiful too! But not even the scent of roses or lilac compares to the scent of orchid flowers. I am sorry Lilac lovers but... Some orchid scents are so unique they are hard to describe. Trying to say.. "it smells like.." is nearly impossible as you can't find the words to describe how an orchid flower smells. The scents can be so complex, it boggles the mind. All you can do is say "Ahh" after taking a whif of an orchid flower. I'm going to try to describe the scents of five of my favorite fragrant orchids. Drum roll please...
Fragrant Orchid Plant Number 1: Dendrobium (Speciosum - Kingianum) - If you are an orchid grower, you know the scent of only a few of these orchids in the greenhouse is enough to fill the entire greenhouse with the crisp scent of orchids. What does this orchid smell like? It smells like hyacinth. The scent is very crisp but not sweet. The flower smells like a mixture of chemicals that is hard to define. I can't remember where I smelled something like this...
Fragrant Orchid Plant Number 2:
Large flowering Cattleya orchid - If you have been around orchids you know that large flowering Cattleyas orchid plants produce a scent that smells like bubble gum. That's right, the flower smells like bubble gum. Growing up we chewed a bumble gum that's called Bubble Yum bubble gum and this flower smells like that. It's an edible scent that smells like your favorite bubble gum.
Fragrant Orchid Plant Number 3:
Oncidium Sharry Baby "Sweet Fragrance" AM/AOS - A list of my favorite blooming orchid plants is not complete without Oncidium Sharry Baby "Sweet Fragrance" AM/AOS - the orchid plant that smells like chocolate. Oncidium Sharry Baby "Sweet Fragrance" has to be the most popular fragrant orchids of all time.
Fragrant Orchid Plant Number 4:
Maxillaria tenuifolia (腋唇蘭) - Here's a fragrant orchid plant that is not too hard to describe. Maxillaria tenuifolia (腋唇蘭) smells like coconut and that's why it's known as the coconut orchid.
Fragrant Orchid Plant Number 5: The flowers of Cymbidium Golden Elf "Sundust" smell like lime. The scent is tart and crisp and smells like lime. Yum!!
I can go on and on with this list of fragrant orchid plants but I have shared only five of my favorite. Enjoy!

Orchid Plants - When was the first time you saw one?My master once said in very profound words - like attracts like at the level of thought. In other words, if you think beautiful thoughts, you will see and experience beautiful things. It's like having a positive attitude. As far as I can remember, I have tried to keep a positive outlook so maybe that's why I am always surrounded by orchid plants. I catch myself staring into an orchid flower mesmerized by it's beauty. I am so grateful to be able to see these beautiful blooming plants that someone higher above put here for us humans to enjoy. So, I can tell you the day I first saw an orchid. It was 1989 at G&B Orchids.

Orchid Plants - Which one is your favorite?
The five most popular orchid plants are.. in order of popularity.. drum roll please.. Phalaenopsis, Oncidium, Cymbidium, Cattleya, Dendrobium and the species orchids. This is not the official list of the most popular varieties, but represents generally the most popular orchid varieties. From this list, my favorite variety of orchid is: the Cattleya orchid. I like this orchid plant for three reasons. One, it is a true epiphyte or air plant. It lives of the nutrients in the air.. amazing! Second, the orchid flowers are most always fragrant. Many of the large flowering Cattleya orchid plants smell like bubblegum. Finally, they are not very common. You don't usually see Cattleya orchid plants in flower shops or orchid vendors. What is your favorite orchid?

Orchid Plants and Water - How to Water Orchid Plants
You can't over water orchid plants if you follow these tips
I like to drink a glass of water first thing in the morning, it's
supposed to be good for you. It has become a habit. Some days I drink
more than others, when I don't feel like drinking the whole glass..
instead of pouring the water down the drain, I water my orchid plants, which
sit on the windowsill of my kitchen. Is this wrong to pour the unused
water that you didn't drink and water my orchid plants? I don't think
there is anything wrong with it. My goal is to keep those orchid plants
alive and if it means sharing water from my drinking glass, then i will
do it. I have also made a discovery. If the orchid plants are in a pot with good drainage, meaning the orchid plant is not sitting
in water, you really can't over water the orchid. Over watering an
orchid usually happens when the pot of the orchid sits in the
water. A quick whiff of the water will tell you if there is any
symbiosis going on.. if the water smells like, umm.. (I can't use the
word here) then you must figure out a way so the orchid plant does not
sit in water. Try adding a lifter between the pot and the planter whereby
the lifter sits in water, not the orchid pot. The goal is to keep the
orchid plant clean and smelling good.
Did you know that more orchid die from over-watering than not enough water? This is an interesting anomoly for the orchid lover but an easy one to solve. The reason may be because orchids are very resilient. I have seen orchid plants growing on cactus in Mexico. It was a Cattleya, the true air plant, flourishing under dry conditions.

The Orchid Greenhouse is Brimming with Bountiful BloomsJust being around such beauty can make you happy
California orchid plant growers have a predicament where in the winter the orchid greenhouse needs to be heated to about 70 degrees Fahrenheit while outside it is about 30 degrees.. although this last winter was a bit colder and wetter than other winters. It rained a lot in the winter of 2010. Right now growers are cooling greenhouse down using giant exhaust fans that blow hot air out. It is summer and the orchid greenhouses are hot so come inside and see bountiful blooms of orchids that will delight the sense and make you want to smile. There is no other blooming plant (and I like a lot of blooming plants) that bestow the sophistication and exquisiteness of a blooming orchid plant. There is nothing more regal that seeing blooming orchid plants used as decorations in hotel lobbies, corporate offices and anywhere else you want to create elegance and beauty.
